Last weekend I meditated – I mean, went raspberry picking.
I went blueberry picking out here (Butler’s Orchard near Germantown, Maryland) a couple of weeks ago and it was fun and appropriately detoxing after all those Aviations, but I reached a whole new level of zen out there on Saturday afternoon. Turns out that the only thing that loves raspberries more than humans are bees, and they were out in such full force that it was hard to tell whether we were at a u-pick site or an apiary. (Come to think of it, I definitely wouldn’t mind trying some honey from raspberry nectar…)
The bees were happily going about their business and didn’t bother us at all, but they did drive away everyone else in the field until my partner in crime and I were literally the only two people remaining. The bees droned, the breeze blew, I picked and ate, and ate and picked, and suddenly an hour had gone by and we had four pounds of fruit on our hands.
Not pictured: the pounds and pounds of yumminess in our tummies. (I gave myself a stomachache from all my gorging.)
We rewarded ourselves for all our “labor” with wine and cornhole at a nearby winery.
I brought some of the goodies back with me to NYC, and they made for a fabulous Monday afternoon snack at my desk.
Summer in a jar! We also picked a small-ish tupperware of blackberries and I think a cobbler may be in order later this week. Fortunately I stocked up on a bunch of pantry staples during a recent shopping trip so I’m all set with sugar and oats and whatnot.
Speaking of shopping, here’s my tally from the first week of August.
